Squamish Rivers Day 2019 was a celebration of the International Year of the Salmon with a “Salmon Forest, Salmon River, Salmon People” theme.
Rhonda O’Grady organized the event for the Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS): participating friends included Nature Squamish, the Squamish Streamkeepers, the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council, the B.C. Community Bat Program, and the District of Squamish. Rotary provided food at a BBQ tent.
Despite heavy rain, a number of enthusiastic people attended. Our Nature Squamish booth included a new game which attracted lots of children. Rhonda had a station where people were making prints of salmon and tree rings. Just when the families with young children were beginning to head home, about 30 BCIT Ecological Restoration students arrived with Edith Tobe, Executive Director of SRWS. They were on a field trip to monitor spawning salmon.
