Western Toad Monitoring

Breeding and migration surveys increase knowledge and reduce impacts to local breeding populations.

Mission

To identify and monitor local western toad breeding populations to better understand the factors that affect breeding timing and success, detect population trends, reduce human impacts, and foster public engagement and stewardship in western toad conservation.

Why is this important?

Western toads are considered a Species of Special Concern in Canada. They are sensitive to habitat loss and fragmentation, disease, predators, pollutants, and climate change. Breeding sites are relatively rare compared to other amphibians, and populations on British Columbia’s south coast appear to be declining.

How are we contributing?

Systematic Field Surveys

Volunteers conduct visual field surveys during breeding and migration periods to determine peak breeding numbers, the timing and locations of key life events, potential impacts, and areas requiring mitigation.

Real-World Conservation Impact

Our work has supported seasonal trail and lakeshore closures, installation of toad crossing structures, and conservation management planning. As capacity allows, we aim to identify other western toad breeding sites that may benefit from systematic surveys — and to document the occurrences of other vulnerable amphibian species in our region.

Volunteer Opportunities

March-April. Conduct surveys at local breeding sites, to count breeding pairs, identify egg laying areas, and track breeding timeline.

June-August. Check for migrating toadlets on trails near breeding sites.

Year-round. Report toad sightings on iNaturalist, to help identify new breeding sites and upland habitat use.
