Report from the 2017 Christmas Bird Count

December 17, 2017

It was a dark and stormy night when…No, wait! It was the Squamish Christmas Bird Count! …when twenty-three intrepid souls set forth in the cold and the rain to record all the birds they could find.

What a day! Thanks to all who participated…there would be no count without you. A special thank you to Judy and Patrick for hosting the after count wind-up.

By all reports from the field, the feeling was that it was a tough day to find the birds, there were fewer individuals, and there were misses on species we would have expected.

Totals:

  • Number of Species: 67, a bit below average.
  • Number of individuals: 7686. (Of that number, 3408 were gulls.)
  • Number of bald eagles: 731, sightly below the average and twice as many as last year.

Complete CBC data is available at Bird Studies Canada CBC. Our count code is BCSQ.
