Overview
Help monitor local western toad populations by surveying breeding activity in Alice Lake Provincial Park. Volunteers work in pairs—on foot and by kayak—to count single toads and mating pairs at two lake sites. No experience needed—just strong observation skills and a commitment to the schedule.
About the Role
Volunteers conduct afternoon surveys at two breeding sites, working in pairs. One person surveys from shore while the other surveys by kayak, with each person recording their own observations. Accurate counting and data recording are essential to support reliable monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow survey protocols, including safety and environmental procedures
- Count single toads and mating pairs at designated sites
- Record observations carefully and independently
- Travel to and between survey locations (hiking required)
- Help carry equipment and launch kayak
Time Commitment
- Mid-March to early May
- 1 shift per week (minimum) for 4–5 weeks
- 4-hour, afternoon shifts (~12:30–4:30 PM)
- Schedule varies with weather and toad activity; flexibility is helpful
- Sign up for shifts via an online scheduling platform
Location
Alice Lake Provincial Park 12 km north of downtown Squamish.
- Access to survey sites is via the Four Lakes Trail (6 km loop, ~150 m elevation gain), or
- Partial drive on a rough gravel road + ~1 km hike each way
- Please note that there is no public transportation to the park—participants must arrange their own transportation or carpool.
