Our Bird Friendly Squamish team brings together individuals and organizations who live in, or have connections to Squamish, who want to protect, restore, and advocate for the conservation of local bird populations and their habitats.
About the Role
The Team coordinates a variety of initiatives to reduce threats to birds in the built environment, campaigns for and promotes municipal policies and practices that protect birds and their natural habitats, and delivers education and outreach related to bird conservation to achieve Bird Friendly City Certification from Nature Canada.

Key Responsibilities:
- Work towards implementing bird-friendly actions and practices, per Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City certification criteria
- Engage with the municipal government to advance bird-friendly policies and practices
- Volunteer for and lead specific bird-friendly projects and tasks
- Promote the Bird Team’s objectives within your wider community and networks
- Maintain regular communications with each other and Nature Canada
Time Commitment:
- The Bird Team meets at least four times each year, with additional initiatives and projects taking place throughout the year
- There is flexibility in how and when members contribute, with the expectation that everyone participates in a meaningful way
Location:
- Bird Friendly Team meetings may take place online or in-person
- Other meetings and activities take place throughout the District of Squamish
Who We Are Looking For:
We are looking for people who have a strong interest in working toward Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City certification in collaboration with our municipal government and other community partners. Ideal members will:
- Live in or have a working connection to Squamish
- Have an interest and knowledge of birds, bird conservation issues, environmental stewardship, biodiversity, environmental advocacy, urban planning and community engagement
- Be able to commit time to Bird Team meetings and activities
- Bring a proactive, collaborative approach and a willingness to help advance actions that benefit birds and their habitats
